Here's more from Bloomberg News:The magnitude-7.9 temblor yesterday left at least 827 people hurt, the country's civil defense agency said on its Web site.
The government declared a state of emergency and countries such as Mexico and Panama pledged aid. It was the world's most powerful quake since a magnitude-8.1 temblor struck off the Solomon Islands in April, triggering a tsunami that killed 54 people.
The region of Ica was hardest hit by the quake, which happened at about 6:41 p.m. local time. All the injured and all except one of the dead came from the area, where a hospital was destroyed and four were damaged, the agency said. One person died in Peru's capital, Lima.
FROM THE VIDEO CLIP ITSELF: Shaking lasted atleast 1.5 minutes. The largest shaking towards the end. The women who seemed like they were freaking out were actually praying fiercely.Labels: earthquake, peru
